Quote 5
“Florah was now six years old. At my mother's insistence, she, too, began school; the burden of financing both our educations rested entirely on my mother, even though my father tried to help from time to time. She begged and borrowed to pay for Florah's school fees, which were demanded upon registration.” (Mathabane 145).
Analysis
This quote proves that although it was not easy to get an education, Johannes' mother never gave up on trying to help her children go to school. Education was highly valued to his mother. She was willing to go through a lot of trouble simply to find and work in multiple jobs, which was also a physical burden in addition to the financial burden that the family already had. The fact that Mrs. Mathabane was willing to go through so much trouble for her children's education proves just how valuable education is to many people, even if many people of Alexandra did not find education very important..
